Bakka Practice Burn

One of our most important training tools is called the "practice burn". It's more than just burning down a house. It allows us to use all of our equipment, and practice all the different fire fighting techniques that we are only able to do at a real fire. The buildings are generally donated to use as the owners have no use for them anymore, yet want to use the property for something else.

This house belonged to a member of the Arbor Vitae Fire Department. Emil Bakka grew up in this house, located just north of hwy 47 along the west side of highway 51. It was a house filled with memories of past holidays, rainy day games, growing up, getting in trouble, and learning the lessons of life. For Emil this was the house of his childhood. But rather than have it removed by wrecking ball and bulldozer, he allowed us to use it as a tool to keep other families safe in their homes so they to would be able to create their own memories.

These images will show you how we set up equipment, and learn how to fight fire. From the initial lighting, until the last ember is put out. Our thanks to Emil and his wife Bev for allowing us to put this home to good use as a practice tool.
