History

Up until recently, Approximately 65% of the departments equipment has been purchased with money raised through fundraising events. Having started with one truck, we currently have six trucks. Out of the original 35 members, we still have 13 charter members actively involved. There have been two fire chiefs since THE ARBOR VITAE FIRE DEPARTMENTS inception. The first chief retired after 5 years service and the current chief has served since 1981.

In 27 years of service we have answered well over 6,000 fire calls and average 19 to 20 men per call. The department has a paid fire inspector and inspections have grown from 52 to over 150 and are being conducted annually. Other than the inspector the dept. is a completely non paid, full volunteer fire dept.

In 1996 the department  intergraded rescue and first responders. First responders consist of members of fire department  and local residents, responding to an average of 20 home calls each month. First responders have medical training and provide care until paramedics arrive. Rescue was intergraded to full fill the need of a growing  community. Equipment like jaws of life, rescue alive, a six wheeler atv, and a 16' jon boat were purchased to better serve our community.
