On Monday June 9, 2008 we were on Brandy Lake, and at Brandy Park in Arbor Vitae for a very educational  rescue squad training session. The two scenarios, outline below, would challenge us on the water as well as on the shore.

Scenario # 1

Two scuba divers are reported to be floating in the middle of Brandy Lake. Both are apparently unconscious with unknown injuries. We are paged out to the scene. The first step is to transport EMR (Emergency Medical Responders) to the Brandy Lake boat landing to so they can get out onto the lake, and head to the accident victims.

Assistant Rescue Chief Todd Rucinski, Responder Todd Wiesendanger, and Responder Julie Howard load equipment into the boat, and proceed out to the patients in the water.

Our team reaches the patient, and begins the process of transporting him to shore where EMR personnel are waiting to asses the patients condition, and prepare him for transport, via Med 5, to the Emergency Room at Howard Young Medical Center.

Once on the shore, the patient, played by Rescue Captain Steve Congdon is assessed by Responders Stan Lewis and Dave Imlah. CPR is then performed on Steve. Meanwhile, the other diver simulated by using a training tool, provides an opportunity for two of the Brandy Beach Lifeguards to sharpen their CPR skills. Rescue Chief Mike Van Meter leads their training, as other members of the Rescue Squad observe the patient treatment..

Scenario # 2

While standing atop the monkey bars at Brandy Park, a man slips and falls hitting his head and becoming entangled on the of the structure. The trick here will be to assess the patient, remove him from the gym equipment, treat him, and prep him for transport to the hospital.

The patient, suffering a severe concussion and other injuries, is fitted with a cervical collar, taken off the monkey bars, and placed on a backboard. Pictured are Rod Organ (the patient) Responders Stan Lewis, Responder Karl Fink, Responder Dave Imlah, Responder Nick Stephens, and Responder Trainee Michelle Brown..
